Private History Rides

Stories From the Driver’s Seat

I’m Gary “Chris” Lamb — Savannah local, history graduate, and the author of the Sea Islands Freedom novels. The ground I write about is the ground I drive on every day. These rides are my way of sharing it: a private drive with a storyteller at the wheel, through the streets and islands where the history actually happened.

Veterans Day · Wednesday, November 11

Fort Pulaski, With the Story Told on the Way

On Wednesday, November 11 — Veterans Day — admission to Fort Pulaski National Monument is free for U.S. citizens and residents. Make a day of it with my 2-hour Savannah History Ride built around the fort: in April 1862, Union rifled cannon breached Pulaski’s brick walls from Tybee Island and changed coastal warfare forever — and you’ll hear that story out on the ground where it happened, told as we drive.

Book Your Ride

$150 per vehicle, not per person · Up to 4 passengers · Private ride, daytime

Three ways to ride

Every history ride is private and priced per vehicle — bring up to 4 passengers for the same price. Pick the ride that fits your visit:

2 hours

Savannah History Ride

$150per vehicle

A private ride through Savannah’s historic streets — the squares, the riverfront, the old neighborhoods — with the stories behind what you are seeing. The city reads different once you know what happened on it.

Half day · about 4 hours

Sea Islands Ride

$275–$300per vehicle

Out to the coast and the islands — the very ground my novels are set on. Marsh roads, old settlements, and the Civil War-era history of the Sea Islands, told from behind the wheel. The exact price for your route is confirmed before you book.

History ride + airport pickup + drop-off

The Airport Bundle

$200per vehicle

Flying in? Bundle a history ride with your airport pickup and your drop-off for $200 total. One booking, one driver, and a welcome to Savannah that starts the minute you land.

Your ride includes my full guide — and you pick the stops

When you book a history ride, I send you my full guide, Savannah From the Driver’s Seat — all 12 chapters, the stories and the places — free with your ride, yours to keep. Read it before your ride day, pick the 4 or 5 places you most want to see, and send me your list. I build your ride around your picks. Your ride, your list — I just drive it and tell the stories. One rule: your picks have to fit the ride you booked — about 2 hours of stops on the Savannah ride, about 4 hours on the Sea Islands ride. If your list runs long, I’ll tell you what fits before your ride day.

Already riding with me?

If I picked you up at the airport and the stories along the way got you curious, you don’t have to miss out on the bundle. The full package — airport pickup, a 2-hour Stories From the Driver’s Seat history ride, and your ride back to the airport — is $200. Already paid me for your arrival ride? The rest is yours for the difference: $170 if your arrival was the $30 downtown fare. Just ask me in the car, call or text (912) 373-2655, or book here at liveoaktaxisav.com.

You’re riding with the man who wrote the history of this coast

I grew up on this coast and graduated with a degree in history, and I’ve spent years turning its stories into novels — Sea Islands Freedom: A Civil War Novel and its sequel, The Chalk and the Sword, are both set right here during the Civil War. The plantations, the marsh crossings, the streets of old Savannah: I don’t just drive past them, I know what happened on them.

A history ride is a private ride, not a performance. There’s no script and no set patter — just you, your party, and the stories of the ground we’re crossing, told by the man who wrote them down. If a stretch of road has a story, you’ll hear it.

Book your history ride

History rides run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the daytime. Book yours below and I’ll confirm the details with you and send you the guide so you can start picking your stops — and if you’d rather talk it through first, call me at (912) 373-2655 and we’ll plan your ride together.

Midweek in Savannah moves a little slower — and so does my calendar. Tuesday and Wednesday rides are wide open: airport runs, Tybee, Hilton Head, downtown. Book at liveoaktaxisav.com — the price you see is the price you pay.

Questions about the history rides

What is a history ride, exactly?

A private ride with a storyteller driving. I take you through Savannah or out toward the Sea Islands and tell you the history of the ground we are crossing — the people, the war years, the stories that never made it onto the markers. It is just your party in the vehicle: no script, no microphone, and no strangers along for the ride.

How much does it cost, and how many people can ride?

Prices are per vehicle, never per person: $150 for the 2-hour Savannah History Ride, $275–$300 for the half-day Sea Islands Ride depending on the route, and $200 for the bundle with airport pickup and drop-off. Every ride takes up to 4 passengers in a standard passenger vehicle.

When are history rides available?

Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the daytime, to start. Book ahead through the form on this page and I will confirm the details with you before your ride. If demand grows, I will open up more days.

Can I pick what we see on my ride?

Yes — that is the idea. Every history ride includes my full guide, Savannah From the Driver's Seat, sent to you when you book. Read through the stories, pick the 4 or 5 places you most want to see, and send me your picks. I plan the route around them, so your ride is built from your list. One limit: the picks have to fit inside the ride time you booked — about 2 hours on the Savannah ride, about 4 hours on the Sea Islands ride. If a list runs long, I will tell you what fits before your ride day.

What is included in the price?

The ride, the stories, and my full guide — Savannah From the Driver's Seat — sent to you when you book and yours to keep. These are driving rides — there are no walking portions, no entry fees, and no food included in the price. What you get is the ground itself, and a driver who knows what happened on it.

Stories From the Driver’s Seat is a private history ride service from Live Oak Airport Taxi, Savannah’s locally owned airport transportation company. Rides are priced per vehicle and confirmed before you ride — the price you see is the price you pay.
